Difference between republic and democracy

Republic:
Republic is the form of government where there is no king, queen or excludes monarch and the people are sovereign. The government is ruled by the elected leaders according to the law. Here the sovereignty is held by the people or the individuals.
Democracy:
Democracy means rule by the people. Democracy is the form of government where power is either held by an individual in absolute monarchy and where the power is held by a small number of the individuals in an oligarchy. Unlike republic, sovereignty is held by the whole population as a group.

History	While the philosophical terminology developed in classical Greece and Rome, as already noted by Aristotle there was already a long history of city states with a wide variety of constitutions, not only in Greece but also in the Middle East. After the classical period, during the Middle Ages, many free cities developed again, such as Venice.	Democracy can be traced back from the present day to classical Athens in the 6th century B.C.E.

Advantages/Benefits	Its advantages are: The government and the people are accountable under the highest law in the land. The power of the executive branch is restrained. Both legislative houses are kept equal under the constitution. The head of the state is an elective representative of the people – not a hereditary monarch. Law making is a slow process which allows for the bill to be properly look over before it is passed. The separation of the powers ensures that every aspect of the political system is kept in check. The constitution of the republic is codified.	Its advantages are: It safeguards the interest of the people. It is based on the principle of equality. It is stable and responsible in administration. It provides political education to the students. There is no chance of public revolt. It is stable form of government. It is based on the public opinion.
Disadvantages	Its disadvantages are: As the law making process is long, it leads to the difficulties in absolute governmental actions. Unelected officials maintains huge amount of influence. A republic’s codified constitution is inflexible. The fundamental aspect of a democracy – the rule of the majority – may be shortened by a republic’s defence of the individual	Its disadvantages are: It gives more emphasis on the quantity than on quality.
